General Notes for Circulation, 2012, video transferred to two 16mm films on loop
The year 1971 is the starting point for a comparison of two historic structures: In this year Eastern State Pennitentiary, the world’s first radial-plan, “spoke-and-hub” prison, closed its doors; and in this year the now-infamous Louisiana Superdome, the world’s largest continuously-spanning domed structure, opened.
Two voices, a British Caucasian female and an African-American male, recite timelines of events in the respective histories of these structures from 1971 to the present. At moments they overlap and synchronize suggesting a hinge point between the 19th century prison’s repurposing as a 20th century spectacle and the use of the spectacular space of the stadium as a 21st century prison.
