Biomaterials (v. 2) 2021, 2-Channel HD Video, color
Biomaterials (ex vivo) is a two-channel video centered on the production of these materials—chemically engineered substrates and scaffolds meant to mimic, and effectively regenerate, body tissue. Combining 3D models with live-action footage recorded in a university laboratory engaged in military biomaterials engineering, the video addresses these “cutting edge” developments with an eye the past—both to biomaterials’ genesis at the intersection of cell biology and textiles as well as the mythical bind between weaving and life in the determinations of the Greek Fates.
If tissue engineering aims to control what scientists and bioengineers call the “fate” of the cell--by ever-tighter manipulation, through evermore restrictive regimes of life-like “flexibility” of biomaterials--how will this control affect the "fate" of the subject of which the cell is a part?
